Camp Site Specific Neckerchiefs

At the Kansas City Trade-O-Ree in February 2009, Dave Evans had a couple of interesting neckerchiefs that he picked up at an estate sale:

Neither neckerchief appears to be professionally made judging by the quality and definition in the design.  They both appear to be made of a muslin material.  The 1975 neckerchief, complete with “Sioux” typo appears to be screen printed.  It is also not clear if these were made by a troop that camped in these sites or if all campsites had specific neckerchiefs during this time period.  Have you seen something similar?  Do you remember getting one as a camper?

NOAC Jackets

 Collectors of Tamegonit Lodge memorobilia are familiar with the NOAC back patches used for contingent members in 1986 and 1988, but did you know there were actually jackets that accompanied the patches?  According to members of the contingents, each contingent member could purchase one of the loose patches and also had the opportunity to purchase a nylon jacket with the patch (gasp!) sewn to the back.  Following are scans of the unsewn patches.  According to Tamegonit Lodge, The First Fifty Years, 96 of the 1986 back patch were made and 103 of the 1988 back patch were made.  It is unclear how many of the patches were sewn to jackets.

Tamegonit Lodge 50th Anniversary (that was 21 years ago…)

It is hard to believe that it has been twenty years since my first year as a Boy Scout camping at Camp Naish. 1989 was my first year as a camper and also the 50th anniversary of Tamegonit Lodge. In addition to the 50th anniversary flaps, here are a few interesting items that the lodge used to celebrate:

The lodge’s first two odd-shapes (X1 and x2) were issued as part of the Lodge’s 1989 50thAnniversary celebration.  The event patches for this year (1989 Spring Conclave, 1989 Fall Fellowship, and 1990 Winter Banquet) combined to form the numeral “50”.  The oval- shaped patches were intended to fit in the center of the “0” in the “50”.  The X2 was awarded to members of the Lodge who accumulated enough points during the year based on attending different events (national and lodge), attending ceremonies and meetings, or working hours at Camp Naish. 

 The X1 was available for purchase through the trading post as part of a set that included the three event patches.  My mom gave me the money to buy this set during Camp Naish family night in the summer of 1990. Thanks, Mom! The X2 below was earned by my dad. Following is a scan of his scorecard.

At the conclusion of the Lodge’s 50th Anniversary, the 1990 Winter Banquet, a silent auction was held for the sale of a framed set of the X1 and accompanying event patches.  Lodge member Bob Norris won the set for approximately $50 and still has it today.

Troop 299, Camp Naish 1960 – NO WATERMELONS

As I wrote a few weeks ago, my dad attended Camp Naish with Troop 299 of Prairie Village, Kansas from 1960-1962. Following is a scan of his camp information packet provided by his troop from 1960.  Click on each image for a larger version.

Tamegonit Neckerchiefs- the P variety

Tamegonit Lodge’s pie-shaped issues (P1 and P2) are intended to be sewn to a neckerchief, much like the arrowhead issues from the Lodge. The lodge-approved directions for assembling a neckerchief are shown below:

In looking at the final line of the directions, it appears that they were printed in August of 1976 (8/76), but the use of the white neckerchief dates back to the arrowhead neckerchiefs of the 1950s.

Here’s the typical result using the directions:

 In my experience, the pie-shaped issues are most frequently found off of a neckerchief.  This could be due to the effort and skill set required to assemble a neckerchief.  However, there were certainly several kind mothers who did accomplish this feat, resulting in a wide range of materials, ribbon color and texture variation.  Given the variety of materials and construction techniques, the assembled neckerchief can resemble a piece of folk art and is a truly unique addition to a collection.

 Shown below is the 1999 Fall Fellowship patch, which I’ve called P3.  This patch was created to celebrate the 60thAnniversary of Tamegonit Lodge.  At first glance it would appear to be a P issue. In reality it is an event issue, but is included in this book for reference.  To celebrate the lodge’s 60th Anniversary, the author created a neckerchief following the 1974 instructions for the older P1 and P2 patches.

Beaded Flap

Beaded Order of the Arrow sashes have always been items that generate a great deal of interest, particularly to those interested in the ceremonial aspects of the Order.  I remember seeing the fully beaded sashes with the beaded legend on the back used by the Tamegonit Lodge ceremonial team.  Assuming these are made by hand, it would take a tremendous amount of time and tedious work to construct one of these sashes.  I did a quick search and there are several tutorials on how to construct your own beaded flap if you so choose.

In that same vein, here is a beaded Tamegonit Lodge flap from the early 1980s:

Made by a lodge member at the time, the flap is similar in size to a typical flap and appears to be modeled after the S11 flap shown below which dates to 1984-85.  The beaded flap has jewel-type beads that give the appearance of a mylar border.

2010 Kansas City Trade O Ree, March 19th & 20th

Once again, Ryan Meador is organizing the Greater Kansas City Area Trade-O-Ree Boy Scout Swap Meet and Memorabilia Show.  All of the tables are sold out, so it should be a good show.

Sailing the high seas of Kansas?

Sea Scouting, which began in early 1910s, is one of the longest running programs of the Boy Scouts of America. Interestingly, the State of Kansas has some unique ties to the early periods of the program. The Sea Scout Ship (S.S.S.) Kansan, based out of Topeka, Kansas, was skippered by William Menniger. Menniger, along with his brother and father established the Menniger foundation and Clinic for the study and treatment of behavioral disorders.

How does this tie into Boy Scout memorabilia? Here’s how: I happened upon this video yesterday regarding early Sea Scout patches:

As I was watching the video, a round patch referred to as a National Flagship award, caught my eye as it is very similar to two patches in my collection that I have not been able to identify…until last night. After a quick digital picture and an email to several Scout memorabilia dealers/historians, the patches in my collection were identified as the 1931 National Flagship award. As it turns out, the S.S.S. Kansan won the National Flagship competition in 1931 and 1933.

Below is an image of the patches.  They are approximately 2″ in diameter and as show below, one is white and one is dark blue.  The color difference is intended to coordinate with the summer and winter uniforms used by the Sea Scouts.

An Illustrated Guide to Tamegonit Lodge Memorabilia

 I am pleased to announce the publication of An Illustrated Guide to Tamegonit Lodge Memorabilia 1939-2009.  The book includes over 140 pages and contains high-resolution images of all of the major patch and flap issues from Tamegonit Lodge #147.  In addition, there are sections on rare and one of a kind items, arrowhead neckerchief slides, prototypes and paper items from the lodge.  Each chapter includes a narrative section and full color images of Tamegonit Lodge memorabilia.
